Abstract

Title:The role of illustrations in the process of translating picturebooks from English to Slovene
Abstract:
The purpose of the thesis is to explore the role of illustrations in the translation process of picturebooks and to find out how the relationship between the verbal and the visual changes in a picturebook when it is translated. Due to the multimodal nature of picturebooks and the inherent connection between the two semiotic systems – the verbal and the visual, picturebooks need to be read, interpreted and translated as a whole. Translator must therefore pay attention to all the elements that contribute to the overall effect of the picturebook. I analyzed the strategies used in the verbal text of twelve English picturebooks and their respective translations into Slovene. The analysis established two categories. In the first one, the word-image interaction has changed in translation due to the use of different translation strategies. The analysis revealed that changes in the verbal-visual relationship most often occured because of omissions. The second category includes examples where the translator manipulated parts of the verbal texts to such a way that discrepancies between the word and image occured in translation.
