Rhetoric is a science with more than 2500-year tradition, defined as »the skill of convincing«. Even though it had its ups and downs it has stood the test of time. The general impression in Slovenian public implies that rhetoric is poorly developed. The master’s thesis presents a search for its causes in school system and focusing on of exploring the position of rhetoric and speaking performances in elementary curriculum for Slovenian language for the last triad. The theoretical part presents the history of rhetoric, explains basic rhetorical concepts along with theory and introduces public speaking in Slovenia, followed by a thorough presentation of the curriculum, the status of rhetoric as an elective course in primary schools, pedagogical discourse and the importance of teacher's model role as a speaker. The practical part contains a structured interview with a Slovenian language teacher and the results of empirical research of speaking performances and importance of rhetoric knowledge among high schools graduates in Zasavje.
