Abstract

Title:
Experiencing of S+sugar intake as an emotional regulation
Abstract:
When we lose or fall out of touch with ourselves, or it gets disrupted on an emotional, mental or physical level, our emotions may take charge over our eating habits in order to avoid distress and elevate comfort. By eating certain foods, we want to decrease feeling certain emotions and feelings and even avoid being aware of certain thoughts at all. We may start using food as a way of comfort and self-healing. Sugar can make us feel better so we may start to eat products that contain a lot of it which consequently gives us conscious or unconscious control over our emotions. The main theme of this master's thesis is Experiencing of Sugar Intake as an Emotional Regulation, and what an individual experiences before, while and after they intake sugar. Based on the interviews conducted with the phenomenological method the author gained insight into individual's experiences who often intake sugar. Results show that participants use sugar intake as a way of regulating their emotions in times of distress or boredom, when they're not feeling particularly positive; more negative than positive. They would intake sugar to make themselves feel better which is very often followed by guilt. This master's thesis contributes to the field by giving insight into emotional experiences, situations and other reasons such as emotional states that lead individuals into intaking sugar.
