Cities today face challenges such as overcrowdedness, congestion, pollution and involvement of population in urban governance. Because of these challenges and new technologies, the concept of smart city has developed, which is already very enforced today. The concept of a sustainable smart city, which is even more committed to safeguarding the environment in smart cities, is also being promoted. Today more and more cities increasingly work on the concept of smart cities, which is why we need a model that will evaluate the smart cities.
In the master's thesis, we mostly used the comparison method and the evaluation approach. The smart cities evaluation model was constructed based on the theory of smart cities concept and a research of different smart city scales. We have identified different categories and the indicators that a model of evaluation of smart cities should contain. We also compared the global, European and Slovenian smart cities. In doing so, we have found that the most developed smart cities are located in Europe, North America and in Asia. We have also found that Slovenian cities are falling behind European smart cities.
The results of the research can serve as guidelines for Slovenian smart cities and a pursuit of good practices in neighboring cities, where a transformation of cities into a smart city proceeds faster. The proposed smart cities evaluation model was first introduced in such a scale. The model mentioned encourages places that can be developed into smart sustainable cities, because cities can adjust their development based on the feedback they receive through evaluation models and scales that rank the smart cities.
