Introduction: Adolescent suicidal behavior is a complex phenomenon and is not only a health problem, it covers all levels of life. Identifying an adolescent with suicidal behavior is complex. Teachers and parents play a huge role in noticing changes in adolescent’s behavior. If we recognize it in time, the adolescent can be included in various prevention programs, as their parents. Purpose: The purpose of this diploma thesis is to present the methods of successful suicide prevention among adolescents in Slovenia and the role of a nurse in a suicidal adolescent. Methods: The diploma thesis used a descriptive method that covered the review of domestic and foreign literature. The review was carried out in the period from January to May 2019. Using the COBISS.SI Cooperative Bibliographic System, we obtained domestic professional and scientific articles. The review of foreign professional literature in the English language was carried out through the bibliographic databases Science Direct, Cinahl and Medline. We focused on freely available scientific and professional literature in Slovene and English. Results: In Slovenia, suicidal adolescents can be included in various prevention programs, as well as their parents and other professionals, so they overcome the difficulties and hardships of the adolescent. Discussion and conclusion: Suicide is a major public health problem in today’s world. Everyone who is in contact with adolescents should be able to recognize the signs of a suicidal predisposed adolescent and act in a timely manner. The various preventive programs implemented in Slovenia are successful and show good results in the field of mental health promotion and suicide prevention. A nurse plays an important role in preventing and helping when there was a suicide attempt. Unfortunately, health professionals working in other areas of healthcare have a lack of knowledge in this area. Every preventable suicide is a great success for the individual and society.
