Abstract

Title:How to watch pornography? : background, concerns, and christianity's objection
Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to explore the background of the problems that pornography poses today on the physical, psychological and spiritual level. Due to the increasing accessibility and consumption of pornography in recent decades, pornography became a problem on the societal level. Besides being the problem in the secular communities, it is also a problem Christians are facing in the Church. The first part of the thesis describes apostle Paul's confrontation with sexual immorality in the Corinthian community (1 Cor. 5–6). It raises issues that are still relevant today, by shedding light on the deeper background of the problem of porneia. The central part describes some of the key findings of scientific research done on the area of pornography and its impact on the individual and society. The impact on the physical, psychological and spiritual level are described. The final part of the thesis brings together the profound insights on the issue of pornography by apostle Paul, John Paul II, Victor E. Frankl, CS Lewis, Jordan B. Peterson, Fulton Sheen, and Reinhard Hütter. They help us see the deeper level of the problem of pornography, which is manifested not only in the negative consequences of its use but in the intrinsic distortion of the human dignity. The Christian response to the problem of pornography is therefore in revealing man's dignity and vocation to the new life which he shares in Christ. At the very end, the challenges posed by pornography to parents and the Church are highlighted.
