Abstract

Title:Preparation of a travel guide for Maribor in easy-to-read form in collaboration with people and for people with intellectual disabilities
Abstract:
Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities contains articles that aim to systemise accessibility for people with disabilities which also include accessibility of information. In Slovenia we have the book Bela knjiga o vzgoji in izobraževanju where principles of non-discrimination and right of equal opportunities are presented. When reading, individuals with disabilities need certain adaptations, which include: use of simpler words, shorter sentences, avoiding metaphors, foreign words, percentage, abbreviations and using the same word for the same thing in the whole document. They have the right to information in all areas of life, also to travel. Even though they have certain the wish to travel, visit new cities and use touristic services can remain. There are little adaptations of information in the touristic field. There are no travel guides available in an easy-to-read version. However, this would be immensely helpful with bringing information closer to people with special needs. In this thesis the European guidelines for preparing easy-to-read material as well as Slovenian rules for it are presented. My research questions were: how many easy-to-read materials are available in Slovenia, how to prepare a text in an easy-to-read version and what information people visiting Maribor might need. With the help of the interviewee I chose six touristic attractions and include them in the guide. I adapted the existing texts from the travel guide and the informative web sites about them. I tested and prepared it completely with seven readers from the reading group from Center za usposabljanje, varstvo in delo Črna na Koroškem. In the making of a travel guide I followed Slovenian rules for Easy-to-read for text and publications. The thesis presents an overview of rules for preparing easy-to-read material, overview of easy-to-read material available in Slovenia, process of preparing a text according to these rules and the text and photographs used in the travel guide. The thesis presents one of the possible methods by which we can cooperate with people with intellectual disabilities. It displays a possibility of cooperation with the goal of creating something useful and until now non-existent of which people with intellectual disabilities and other individuals who have difficulty reading or understanding what they have read.
