Abstract

Title:Impact of two timber harvesting Technologies on regeneration of uneven-aged silver fir-beech stands
Abstract:
In the master’s thesis, we studied the influence of two methods of logging on regeneration in uneven-aged mixed mountain stands. The research was conducted in the Novo mesto forest management region, Poljane forest management unit, compartment 43. The purpose of the thesis was to analyze the changes in light conditions, regeneration structure, mixture and damage following two working methods (combined machine logging and motor-manual cutting). After the recordings in the years 2009 and 2015, additional field measurements of the selected parameters of regeneration were performed in 2018. The findings show that there were no essential differences between two working methods regarding damage and development of regeneration. In both treatments the density of regeneration remained high during the whole inventory period. The level of damage of to individual saplings and the differences between both treatments declined with the development of regeneration. The analysis of development and height structure of regeneration showed, that the share of beech distinctively increases. Because of swift removal of mature stand, a good potential for minority tree species was recorded. It was ascertained that the mixture changed into the desired direction from the years 2009 to 2018 with a declining share of spruce when compared to the mature stand. However, the analyses indicated unsatisfactory recruitment of sycamore maple and silver fir because of overbrowsing by ungulates and the lack of frequent tending of crop trees.
