Abstract

Title:Religion and popular culture: a case study of TV series Lucifer
Abstract:
In modern society, we can sense religion and popular culture in every aspect of our lives. It is therefore important to understand the interaction between religion and popular culture in order to comprehend the role of religion in everyday life. However, to understand this interaction, it is essential to understand the concept of religion and the concept of popular culture per se. These two fields interact in four different ways: religion in popular culture, popular culture in religion, popular culture as religion, and religion and popular culture in dialogue. The analysis of characters from the TV series Lucifer shows that in this series religion is present in popular culture. Character personalities are based on biblical figures. For a TV series, it is also important how viewers perceive it. Based on the analysis of viewer ratings for eight episodes, we concluded that the series has a good rating no matter how the devil is portrayed in the show. In the case study, we came across opposing comments by Christian communities; on one hand, religion felt challenged by the series, and on the other hand inspired by it since it encouraged them to think about faith, the perception of God, as well as the existence of Satan and its presence in everyday life.
