The final seminar paper defines the forms of social capital, as well as the relationship and the mutual connection between social capital and sustainable development within the local community of Šmartno pri Litiji. The recognition of practices of sustainable development and the evaluation of building-blocks of social capital has been accomplished by collecting and processing the statistics, researching the literature on the subject and analysing the content of ten interviews. The interviewees included eight presidents of local associations (clubs), a primary school headmaster and a priest. Within the local community, social capital mostly realises in the everyday lives of the locals. Accomplishing collective goals requires a lot of cooperation which is hard to establish and retain, but joint activity of all the levels of networking in rural areas can gradually lead towards the accomplishment of global goals of sustainable development. Local societies (or clubs), the primary school and the parish maintain a connected and equally responsible rural community which is oriented towards realising sustainable development on the local or the municipal level. On our area of research, we have recognised mostly everyday practices of the social aspect of sustainable development. The two other aspects (economic and environmental) also show important potential, if the locals learn how to sensibly develop them. The local clubs are interested and feel the need to realise the practices of sustainable development, but as of yet, they do identify their involvement as a contribution to the development of local community and do not recognise their activities as a contribution towards sustainable development of the rural areas.
