Social media has become an important tool in political communication, with its accessibility, easy usage and a large number of users. The promise of social media isn’t only in its wide accessibility, the speed of information sharing and mass usage, but also because social media is supposed to impact positively on political participation. Given its size and active users, Twitter has become one of the main social media used in political campaigns. This way, politicians can avoid gatekeepers, which are a part of traditional media and moderate their own political discourse. One of the most noticeable political users is most certainly Donald Trump with his rhetoric that is different from other political actors. Throughout my diploma thesis, I researched how social media has changed political communication and how this is noticeable on Twitter. Later I analyzed Donald Trump’s tweets from the time of his presidential campaign (2016-2017), where I found out what kind of rhetoric he uses and if his political communication combined with social media enables a stronger democracy.
