Senovsko-Brestaniška valley is located in the Posavje hills and is a part of Spodnjeposavska statistical region. The process of industrialization and urbanization in Senovo and Brestanica are closely linked with the discovery of coal and later with the construction of the railway on its southern edge. Coal was found at Senovo in 1796, and in 1862 the train passed the valley for the first time. In the 60’s of the 19. century, coal mine employed around 1.000 workers, later its importance decreased. With the coming interruption in coal mining, in the valley started a few new businesses, including a metal-processing establishment Metalna Senovo and the packaging factory Senovo TES (today DS Smith Slovenia). They are still in operation. Today, most residents migrate to work in neighbouring major cities daily. Others are employed in local industrial establishments or at home, in private companies.
