Abstract

Title:The impact of the Second World War on the representation of childhood in Slovenian autobiographies
Abstract:
The Second World War has shaken up the fundaments of human life and affected many. Among these affected were also Slovenian children who have experienced the effects of the Italian and German occupying forces. The effects of the World War have been documented by Slovenian writers in their autobiographies through the eyes of a child. Literature can express the zeitgeist of a certain period of time which is why this paper focuses on the authors’ memories and sets them in a historically accurate context. The paper also focuses on factors which constitute the daily routine of a child (family, school, children’s games). It provides a closer look on the analysis of the changes that happened in the daily routine in Ljubljana, Primorska and in concentration camps during the war as well as how it affected the representation of childhood. Apart from the daily routine analysis the paper also includes an insight into the effects nationality and the denationalization policy had on the representation of childhood in the autobiographies. With the outline of these circumstances the paper tries to present the children’s daily routine as the Slovenian writers remember it and also shine a light on the problematics of childhood in times of war.
