Abstract

Title:ORGANIZATION OF THE PROTECTION OF ELDERLY IN THE REPUBLIC OF SLOVENIA WITH HIGHLIGHTS ON THE LOCAL ACTION GROUP THE HEART OF SLOVENIA
Abstract:
The organization of care work for older persons is attracting more attention year by year, and in the future, it will require even more attention, as trends indicate that Europe’s population is aging rapidly. According to Eurostat data, by 2050, more than 36 per cent of Europe’s population will be 65 years old or more. By 2060, Slovenia will have nearly 2,058,000 inhabitants, a third of which will be older than 64. As part of the study, we conducted a survey on the formal organization of Local Action Groups (LAG) in Slovenia and on the organization of village centres in areas covered by Slovenian LAGs. An interview was also conducted with the management of the LAG Heart of Slovenia. As part of the international comparison, we also personally consulted with the stakeholders of the HoCare project in Slovenia, who provided us with a wider perspective on innovative home care solutions. The key findings showed that formal care for older persons in Slovenia was very diverse and widespread. Nevertheless, institutional care was still scarce. More adequately trained staff which would help older persons stay at home longer are needed. Village centres which provide people with opportunities to engage in various activities and for care – all in one place – have proven to be of great use in the care of older persons, particularly in the countryside. Another great step forward for home care of older persons are innovative solutions that will give them a more pleasant stay in the comfort of their homes.
