A number of different reactions between vanadium(V) oxide and corresponding halopyridine in hydrofluoric acid have been carried out. Halopyridines that I used are: 2-fluoropyridine, 2-chloropyridine and 2-bromopyridine. Two new compounds were obtained: 2-chloropyridinium aquatetrafluoridooksidovanadate(V), (C5H5NCl)[VOF4(H2O)] and 2-bromopyridinium aquatetrafluoridooksidovanadate(V), (C5H5NBr)[VOF4(H2O)]. The resulting products were characterized by elemental analysis, infrared spectroscopy, 1H and 19F nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and X-ray structural analysis. Halopyridinium cations C5H5NX+ (X = Cl, Br) and aquatetrafluoridooxidovanadate(V) anions [VOF4(H2O)]- are connected by hydrogen bonds in solid products.
