Abstract

Title:
Fun math in the escape room
Abstract:
This master thesis investigates fun math in an escape room, which is a fairly new but popular concept. Escape room is a sort of a detective game, which occurs in a specific place. Participants must work together, make logical conclusions, think and with the help of different objects made available, escape from the room. It is important, that the participants are successfully solving assignments and follow the clues, which lead to the exit. Escape room model can be an interesting way of teaching in elementary school math class. Because there is too many pupils in regular class, escape room could be a part of supplementary lessons or a part of extracurricular activity. This activity helps motivate pupils to develop logical thinking, assumption and problem-solving by using different materials and accessories in a different way. At the same time they become familiarized with different strategies in problem solving. Furthermore they learn how to cooperate and help each other. Many pupils that would not normally choose math as extracurricular activity, would find playing escape room in finding hints and clues fun and dynamic enough. In the empirical part of the thesis I was researching the following questions: what are the strategies of the pupils when solving math problems; does escape room present a challenge for pupils in school environment; does cooperation between pupils lead to a more effective solving of math problems; what do pupils think about solving math problems in an escape room and are they capable of creating an escape room using math. I will use quality research method; I will find answers to my research questions by analyzing questionnaire results, recordings and observational notes. With my research I want to introduce schools this activity and help them realize escape room’s potential for achieving learning goals in math.
