Abstract

Title:
Conflict between visitors and residents of the city center in the case of street music in Ljubljana
Abstract:
In space where we act, power relations between different social groups are recognized. Space is regulated differently for particular social groups. Street musicians embody values of freedom and spontaneity with their history. However, for the entrepreneurs working nearby they represent disturbance. They manifest their power by demanding a regulation of street musicians from local authorities who authorize their demand. This regulation proves to be successful in most cases in practice, as most musicians do not break the law. In the cases of exception where they break the rules there is no sign of legal consequences. There are no major differences in comparison of research of street musicians actions between the summer and winter seasons. In both seasons of research the most common instrument is the accordion while selected locations correspond with sections of the city center that are the most concentrated. Although local authorities encourage the spontaneity of street performances, that freedom is deceptive. Residents of the city do not communicate with local authorities about street musicians and nor do tourists. The only type of communication between local authorities and street musicians is through their regulation. Therefore, power of entrepreneurs as city visitors prevails over other participants in the city as they can demand regulation of other social groups who are present in common space.
