Abstract
Metode dela: Raziskovali smo izkušnje slovenskih žensk, njihovo znanje o alternativnih načinih dodajanja in to, kako dobro jih poznajo. ?

Title:Knowledge and experiences of Slovenian women with alternative feeding methods : diploma work
Abstract:
Introduction: Alternative feeding methods are methods that are used in order to feed the baby when breastfeeding is not possible or sufficient. Despite studies and instructions of leading experts, one of the best known and used feeding methods is a bottle with a teat. Purpose: We wanted to present the current alternative feeding methods. We studied the experience of Slovenian women, their knowledge about alternative feeding methods and how well they are familiar with the alternatives. Methods: We used the descriptive method. A quantitative survey in women who gave birth to term infants from January 2013 to December 2017 was carried out. A structured questionnaire was used in order to obtain data. 1091 respondents responded to the online survey, which was shared on Facebook. Results: At home, most of the respondents (96 %) use a bottle with a teat, which is the most known feeding method. 38 % of all respondents who used a bottle with a teat in the maternity ward were able to exclusively breastfeed at home. 40 % of respondents do not know which alternative feeding method is suitable for successful breastfeeding, 40 % would use the recommended methods and 20 % would use the methods that some experts do not recommend. 95 % of the respondents chose a bottle as the most known feeding method, and the majority (68 %) chose feeding with supplementation aid as the least known method. The following alternative methods are not well-known by most respondents: a cup (62 %), a spoon (51 %), a syringe or a dropper (67 %). Discussion and conclusion: It has been found that most women who use a bottle with a teat for feeding their baby in the maternity ward, do not succeed exclusively breastfeeding at home. Slovenian women do not know much about alternative feeding methods and they are not aware how to avoid nipple confusion, even though they know what nipple confusion is. Women would use an unknown alternative feeding method, if they knew the method better or if it would help them with breastfeeding. It was also found that professional staff in the maternity ward and elsewhere have a major influence on the mother's choice of feeding.
