This diploma thesis deals with two similar but yet different instrument landing systems, the ILS and the MLS. Both systems are already in existance for a longer period of time but ILS still contimues to prevail. The thesis describes the principle of operation of both systems and explains why one system is more or less suitable than the other.
Second part of the thesis focuses on the Jože Pučnik Airport in analyzing the flight time used in the account for both systems. Two different types of aircraft were used in the analysis, namely jet and turbo-propeller aircraft. With the help of the Flight Simulator arrival procedures from the directions of prevailing arriving traffic were simulated. All arrival procedures are designed for the ILS approach, since ILS is already in use at the airport. MLS arrival routes were proposed in line with MLS capabilities. Upon comparison of the arrivals following both types of arrival routes it was established that savings using MLS are marginal and that introduction of the MLS system at Jože Pučnik Airport, is economically unjustified.
