In the diploma thesis, I have researched the origin of the industrial revolution and its influence to a city and its social areas where people gather, how they have been transformed from the 20th Century until today, and how the city centre has been losing its original meaning due to the growth of shopping malls at the outskirts of the cities. Appearance of new technologies and media has become the main guideline of the modern society, which leads to the transformation of people's spare time spending. In the second part of the diploma thesis, I have focused on the city Kranj because it also faces spreading of the consumption canters at the outskirts of the city. However, the city centre has been losing its vibrant city throb. Industrialisation in Kranj has brought mass arrival of foreigners to the city, which has led to lowering of old bourgeoisie. The analysis at the end of the thesis has shown that some traditional ways of spending one's spare time are still present, however, due to the more advanced technology, they have become even more sophisticated. Cultural contents have been intertwined with the consumers' spare time activities. The difference between the way of dressing and behaviour in public is also vivid, which can be connected to the process of deformalisation of the today's society.
