Abstract

Title:Cloud top height estimation from a single satellite image : master thesis
Abstract:
The master thesis describes the process of cloud top heights estimation from a single satellite image. We attempted to solve the problem in two different ways, by using two different methods. With the first method, we estimated the clouds’ top heights by using a RapidEye satellite image. Due to the construction features of the RapidEye scanners, there is a small acquisition time gap between different spectral bands. Therefore, the parallax occurs – the objects that are high above the Earth (clouds) in the images are colour-shifted. In the first method we used the parallax and, based on the known time gaps between spectral bands and the measured parallaxes, we calculated the height of the clouds’ tops. In a second technique, the method structure from motion was used. By using the photographs taken from the International Space Station, we generated a photogrammetric point cloud from which we estimated the height of the clouds. Due to the poor accuracy of the results obtained, a further study of the use of this method for determining the height of clouds is required.
