Title:The Sociologist and the Digital Society: Challenges and Perspectives in the Era of Big Data
Abstract:
In the master thesis the various phases of technological innovation are traced in relation to the world of knowledge. In particular, the aim is to outline a theoretical framework in which to insert the new proposals of university master programs in Italy and in the of Europe concerning the role of the Sociologist in the digital era. The relationship between Sociology and other disciplines, including Information Technology, is considered in the era of social big data. The relevance of this phenomenon has led to the identification of new multidisciplinary educational programs, oriented towards a digital Sociology in the Italian scenario for the master degree programs. The thesis is organized in three chapters. In the first chapter, new digital media are described and compared with traditional media, with emphasis on the development of the Internet and of new ICT networks. In the second chapter the characteristics of digital sociology are outlined, focusing on how social research has been developed into the era of social big data. A section is devoted to the master degrees in Social Informatics offered in various universities, including the University of Ljubljana. In the third chapter, the Italian master degree programs in Sociology and social research offered in academic year 2018/19 are considered, as well as the new master degree programs in Techniques and methods for the information society. These latter provide an interdisciplinary teaching offer, creating an interesting fusion of knowledge for the definition of job profiles with strong transversal skills and ability to work in dynamic and multidisciplinary environments in the domains of the Data Science.
