Abstract

Title:Wealth and youth
Abstract:
The master’s thesis presents a child’s view of wealth. This subject is highly relevant based on the current situation in the world and in Slovenia. This master’s thesis aims to study what schoolchildren–young and old–understand under the term wealth, which characteristics they attribute to the wealthy and which to the poor, and if perhaps recognising the material standard of their peers affects their relationship. The thesis also focuses on their generosity and the importance of material and social possessions. A causal non-experimental method and a descriptive non-experimental method of the empirical pedagogical research ware used. It includes 171 elementary school students from second and third as well as eighth and ninth grade, and shows that for older students being wealthy means having a family and friends, while younger students associate wealth with having toys and money. The findings of the research indicate that all students demonstrated they can be very generous and that they wish to donate material possessions. Students attribute more positive traits to poor families than rich families. Compared to older students, younger students prefer schoolmates who have more material possessions and they believe that having more wealth contributes to their happiness and success. The research also concluded that older and younger students–girls and boys–think that social possessions are more important compared to material possessions. According to the results, it would be reasonable to devote more attention to this particular problem within the school subject of Household Economics by introducing activities that would enable students to overcome their stereotypical beliefs about inequality and otherness, as well as encourage the students’ generosity and a healthy perception of wealth.
