The cause of psychosis is not known. Patients with psychosis are
experiencing disorders in their daily functioning due to factors, connected with their
disease. Consequently, this causes a negative impact on their general health. The most
limiting are emotional and behavioural disorders, which often completely change the
individual’s life. They weaken the family ties and additionally have a long-term impact on
the wider social community. Rehabilitation is usually very long and complex. This is often
due to medicines they need to take, which are, however, crucial. Purpose: In the thesis, we
mainly focused on the role of the nurse in ensuring holistic care for the psychotic patient.
Her work highly influences the patients’ wellbeing, his adaptation to the environment, his
communication with the surroundings and finally, the outcome of the treatment. She is the
entire time around the patient, monitors him, and informs the team, treating the patient,
about all the changes. Work methods: For the preparation of our thesis, we used the
descriptive research method and proven professional sources. We defined psychosis, types
of psychotic disorders, its signs, symptoms and treatment. We also looked deeply into the
history of the treatment of patients with psychosis and developments in this field. We also
stressed out the influence of medicines on patients and presented some thoughts about
different treatment types. Results: The main object of our research were treatment
procedures and problems, occurring within nursing in the field of psycho-social everyday
activities of psychotic patients and the influence of these problems on their relatives. We
found that problems are often present in all areas of the patients’ psychosocial functioning.
They depend on the intensity of the mental disorder. They also affect the deterioration of
the patients’ physical health. They are often connected with an unhealthy lifestyle,
including smoking, irregular and excessive food intake and physical inactivity. We have
also found that individuals with a mental disorder have great problems in the fields of
attention, execution of function and processing. In order to solve the nursing problems, the
thesis provides suitable nursing activities. Discussion and conclusion: There are numerous
problems in the psychosocial field. Some of them can be solved, but certainly not all of
them. We need to be aware that these problems and long lasting and complex. They
demand individual treatment of the patient as well as his family. Its main purpose is to
provide long-term support and maintain the acquired abilities. There is almost no literature
discussing and giving directions in the field of nursing. This field still demands a lot of
work and consequently more help for those with the disease and for their families.
