The balancing of professional and family life is gaining importance, as it has become necessary to effectively combine the obligations of one's professional and personal life. This results in a higher quality of the lives of employees and improves their job performance. A greater balance can be achieved if organisations and the state were to introduce certain measures in the workplace.
The diploma thesis examines the problem of the balancing of professional and family life among the employees of an administrative unit in Ljubljana. The purpose was to study and determine the workload of employees and their difficulties with balancing it with their family obligations, which mainly applies to employed parents. The thesis attempted to determine what could be changed or improved in this area, what employees could do to achieve a greater balance, and what the employer and employees could do together.
Research was conducted using the survey method. The survey has established that professional and family lives are well balanced at the Ljubljana Administrative Unit, since the respondents show no symptoms of being burdened by stress in the workplace, e.g. they do not complain of any problems, are not taking sedatives, are not experiencing cardiac rhythm disturbances, headaches, a weakened immune system, are not irritable, etc. On the other hand, the survey has shown that some are less satisfied with their jobs, as one group of people disagreed with this statement and the other did not; for this reason, the workplace should be improved, for it seems that some individuals are not satisfied with how their professional and personal lives are balanced at the Ljubljana AU.
It is therefore recommended that the organisation introduce specific measures relating to the balancing of professional and family life, such as organised day care and the option of exercising the right to work part time. Both measures have proved to be effective.
