Tabloid journalism, both of high quality and of low quality standards, has in recent year increased its presence in Slovenia. Tabloid press focuses on entertaining its audience by writing about celebrities, their personal lives, careers, and relationships. Various theories suggest that tabloids built on specific language and have typical visual features; specifically low quality photos. Tabloids pivot around stories that readers finds shocking and disregard the quality of the content. The main objective of this master’s thesis is to determine, whether the Slovenian magazine Story published by the Adria Media Ljubljana publishing house, is consistent with theoretical assumptions of different foreign and Slovenian researchers, i.e. assumptions about the tabloid magazines language and quality of photos. My second goal was to establish what were the characteristics of the language policy of the Story's editorial office. The literature review conducted for the theoretical part of this thesis has revealed a lack of current research on tabloid magazines in Slovenia as well. Both analyses (text analysis and the interview) confirmed that the magazine Story is in fact a tabloid, however it tries to enhance the quality of the language and photography. The Story magazine consciously dismisses the style of writing that is foreseen by the literature, namely it rejects discourtesy and the use of colloquial terms and slang. It also dismisses the use of poor quality photography, which may be offensive to the subject.
