Abstract

Title:Guidelines for creating survey questionnaires for smartphones
Abstract:
Web surveys on mobile devices became part of our everyday life. Today, respondents are using various devices, such as smartphones or tablet computers to answer survey questionnaires. Because of that, designing a survey questionnaire that suits various devices is challenging and problems occur if the questionnaire is not adapted for completion via a mobile device. In the literature, several guidelines on how to create a questionnaire that suits mobile devices can be found, but in practice this is still very challenging. In my diploma thesis, I focus on a set of survey question types and on how their design is suitable for smartphones. I focus on questionnaires prepared by an online survey tool 1ka, specifically how questionnaires designed with this tool are adapted for survey completion on different smartphones. In the theoretical part, I present guidelines for creating survey questionnaire for smartphones as can be found in the literature. Based on this I determine heuristics and use them in the heuristic analysis in the empirical part of the thesis to test if the selected questionnaire is more appropriate to be completed on an Android or an iOS smartphone. Further, I test a selected web questionnaire on a smartphone with a group of respondents with whom I also conduct cognitive interview immediately after the survey. I use the results from my analysis to find appropriate guidelines that can be used for designing questionnaires for smartphones using 1ka tool, as well as some other tools.

Keywords:smartphone, web survey, questionnaire testing, heuristic analysis, cognitive interview.
