The thesis deals with a novel of a czech writer Miloš Urban, titled The Seven Churches and subtitled A Gothic Novel of Prague. It is a postmodernistic prosaic text, written according to the model of a classical gothic novel, however, it is set in modern times. The goal of this thesis is to explore the relationship between postmodernism as a literary period and traditional gothic genre, which was at the peak of its popularity in mid 18th century. It focuses on how the gothic genre is modified, transformed and adapted to fit an otherwise typical postmodernistic text.
