Abstract

Abstract:
The diploma thesis tries to shed light on the attitude of Egyptians towards their colonisers and the emergence of national consciousness as it is presented in the Naguib Mahfouz novel Cairo Trilogy. The novel depicts the Egyptian society and the social and political situation in a very realistic and picturesque way. Through the views of the characters in the novel we will see what was the actual mood in the times of British colonisation and how the Egyptians started to look for national freedom and new approaches to state regulation and life after the departure of the coloniser and transition into postcolonialism. European colonialism was very powerful and widespread in the 19th and 20th century and left an impact that is still be felt in the majority of the world especially in Asia, Africa and Middle East, where Egypt belongs to.
