Abstract:
This degree paper discusses two novels by Jorge Amado, one of the most translated and well known 20th-century Brazilian authors: Gabriela, Clove and Cinnamon (Gabriela, cravo e canela) and Shepherds of the Night (Os Pastores da noite). It presents social and political situation in Brazil in the middle of 20 th century, and examines the influence of the Amado's local environment on his novels. Special attention is given to the attempt of establishing the position of Amado's works in the history of Latin American literature, and to Amado's treatment of female characters in both novels.
