Fan fiction is literature based on pre-existing works of fiction. In accordance with Abigail Derecho's research I first classified it as a subgenre of archontic literature and then defined some of its specific qualities. I described types of intertextual connections and arranged them according to their degree. While intertextuality in the first degree marks the connection only to the source text on which fan fiction is based, intertextuality in the second degree also marks the connection to other sources. I divided the latter into categories according to what other sources it uses - works of classic literature, works of popular culture, literary genres, other works or genres of fan fiction. Special methods of collaboration have developed between the readers and the authors of fan fiction and they are largely the result of using the Internet as communication medium. Fan fiction is a community literature, which means all works are interrelated, and the distinction between the readers and the authors is becoming more and more unclear.
