Abstract
V raziskavi smo uporabili kvalitativni in kvantitativni pristop. V kvantitativnem delu raziskave je sodelovalo 63 slovenskih in 69 ameriških zakonskih in družinskih psihoterapevtov, ki so izpolnili dva vprašalnika: vprašalnik velikih pet (BFI – Big Five Inventory), ki meri dimenzije modela osebnosti (ekstravertnost, sprejemljivost, vestnost, odprtost, nevroticizem) in vprašalnik izgorelosti (MBI – Maslach Burnout Inventory), ki meri poklicno izgorelost. V kvalitativnem delu raziskave pa so sodelovali trije slovenski in trije ameriški zakonski in družinski psihoterapevti, s katerimi smo opravili polstrukturiran intervju.

Title:
Burnout among Family and Marriage Psychotherapists: a Comparison Study between Slovenia and the USA
Abstract:
The focus of the following research has been the presence of job burnout among family and marriage psychotherapists in Slovenia and the US, possible differences between the two countries and lastly to what extent do the dimensions of personality traits correlate with those of burnout syndrome. In the quantitative part of the research we had participating 63 Slovenian and 69 American family and marriage psychotherapists. They filled out two questionnaires, the Big Five Inventory (BFI) and the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI). In the qualitative part of the research we had 3 slovenian and 3 american family and marriage psychotherapists participating in a half structured interview. The results showed that neither the Slovenian or the American family and marriage psychotherapists were experiencing burnout. The data showed that more Slovenian than American family and marriage psychotherapists had an additional job or also did other work than just practicing psychotherapy. Dimension nevroticism was shown to be a significant predictor of burnout syndrome. We have also found a positive connection between conscientiousness and personal accomplishment. Family and marriage psychotherapists who had higher scores on conscientiousness were more personally accomplished. The results also showed that family and marriage psychotherapists who had more years of family and marriage psychotherapy practice behind them felt less emotionally exhausted and felt more personal accomplishment. The qualitative part of the research showed that the clients burdens and failed balance between private and professional life were the biggest triggers of burnout syndrome in the psychotherapy occupation. Colleague support, the support of those closest to the psychotherapist, diverse strategies of handling stress and attending supervision meetings were shown to be among the strongest factors in preventing and dealing with burnout syndrome among family and marriage psychotherapists in Slovenia and the US. The value of this research lies in the fact that it is one of the first studies that researched the presence of burnout syndrome among psychotherapists in Slovenia, let alone among family and marriage psychotherapists in Slovenia. And furthermore offers a unique overview of family and marriage psychotherapists and their circumstances in Slovenia, especially since we included almost the entire population of family and marriage psychotherapists in Slovenia.
