Abstract

Title:Character strengths in romantic relationships
Abstract:
Quite a large number of studies have focused on correlations between character strengths and satisfaction with live so far. Yet little in terms of character strengths and satisfaction with life has been researched in connection to romantic relationships. In present study, 44 heterosexual couples (Mage = 24,73 years, SDage = 8,08 years), filled in individually the VIA-120 survey, measuring character strengths, and the Satisfaction of Life Scale. The first aim of the study was to use the shorter version of the VIA-IS questionnaire (VIA-120) on the Slovenian sample. VIA-120 had never been used in Slovenian language or in general population sample before, which is why we intended to examine descriptive statistics and to test statistical characteristics of the questionnaire. Secondly, differences between men and women in the sample were researched. Finally, the study was to show the connection between satisfaction with life and couple’s shared character strengths. Results have shown similar gender differences as were reported in previous studies. Also, correlation between character strengths and life satisfaction were similar as in previous studies: love, perseverance, zest, curiosity, hope, spirituality, gratitude and judgement showed the highest correlations. Romantic partners showed similarity in the next two character strengths: bravery and love of learning. Moreover, romantic partners were more similar to each other in the endorsement of only two specific character strengths (spirituality and leadership) than the randomly paired couples.
