Introduction: Sudden cardiac arrest is one of the leading causes of death in Europe. Immediate cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) can double or even triple a person’s chance of surviving cardiac arrest; otherwise, a person’s chance of surviving decreases every minute. Therefore, CPR by passers-by is absolutely necessary.Purpose: The purpose of the diploma work is to determine the knowledge among the 3rd year students of the Nursing programme at the Ljubljana Faculty of Medicine on the implementation of CPR procedure and the use of an automated external defibrillator. Methods a descriptive and quantitative method of work was used to complete the diploma work. A critical review of literature was made for theoretical basis. The empirical part was based on an anonymous questionnaire, which was completed by 41 students of the 3rd year of the Nursing programme at the Ljubljana Faculty of Health care. Microsoft Excel (version 2017) was used for statistical analysis and display of results. Results: 95% of respondents know the correct ratio in CPR with an adult. 63% would be able to resuscitate a baby. 93% would be able to open the airway. 34% of them know the correct frequency of rescue breaths when resuscitating an adult. 88% of them know the correct depth of chest compression. 78% of respondents know the purpose of using AED. 67% would be able to place AED electrodes without AED assistance. 72% of them know that customized electrodes should be used with children under eight years of age. Discussion and conclusion: The results of the study show that students have insufficient knowledge of cardiopulmonary resuscitation procedure and use of an automated external defibrillator, which needs to be improved. Main weaknesses of knowledge are: the correct frequency of rescue breaths, baby resuscitation and how to place AED electrodes.
