Abstract
Vse od začetka organiziranih bojev logistika predstavlja pomemben element pri operativnosti vsake vojske. Vojaški material, kot so orožje, strelivo, sredstva za preživljanje, ter vojaška in druga oprema vojakov morajo biti proizvedeni ali pridobljeni in skladiščeni. Nenazadnje morajo biti vojaki transportirani in na bojišču oskrbovani s hrano in potrebnim vojaškim materialom. Ameriška secesijska vojna je na področju logistike predstavljala pravo revolucijo. Bila je namreč prva vojna, v katero je bil vpleten celoten kontinent. Za vodenje bojev na dolge razdalje pa sta morali obe strani, tako Unija kot Konfederacija, razviti učinkovit logistični sistem. Slednjega je zaznamovala iznajdba parnega stroja, kar je privedlo do izuma parnika in železnice. Prvega je v večji meri uporabljala Unija za namene vodnega transporta vojakov, živali, krme, hrane in druge vojaške opreme, železnico pa sta v vojaške namene v večji meri uporabljali obe strani. Že na začetku vojne se je izkazala premoč Unije na področju logistike, saj je imela večje proizvodne zmogljivosti, razpolagala pa je tudi z večjo železniško infrastrukturo, kar ji je omogočilo učinkovitejši in hitrejši transport vojakov in vojaškega materiala. Na drugi strani se je Konfederacija vseskozi vojno spopadala s številnimi logističnimi težavami, kot so produkcija in pridobivanje potrebnega vojaškega materiala, primanjkljaj vprežnih živali in krme, pomanjkanje potrebnega kadra za organiziranje in vodenje vodnega in rečnega transporta ter nenazadnje tudi nezadostno razvita in razkroj že obstoječe železniške infrastrukture.

Title:The role of logistics in the American Civil War
Abstract:
Ever since the origin of organized warfare, logistics have been an important factor of the operations of all armies. Material, such as arms, ammunition, food, and other military equipment, have to be produced or acquired and stored. Furthermore soldiers have to be transported to the battlefield and supplied in order to successfully carry out military operations. The American Civil War revolutionized military logistics. Namely it was the first war which spilled across the whole continent. In order to carry out long distance military operations both, Union and Confederacy, had to develop effective logistical systems. The biggest influence on their development had the invention of the steam engine which lead to the rise of steam boats and railroad. The former was mostly adopted by the Union which used rivers as means of transportation of troops, animals, fodder, food and other military equipment, while railroads were used in majority by both sides. The Union entered the war logistically better prepared, namely because of greater manufacturing capabilities and wider railroad network, which enabled more effective and faster transportation of troops, supplies, and other military equipment. Meanwhile, the Confederacy was not able to solve logistical problems, such as production and acquisition of the necessary material and military equipment, draught animals and fodder deficit, insufficient skilled workers who would organize and manage water and railroad transportation, and last but not least, underdevelopment and decline of the existing railroad infrastructure.
