The purpose of this bachelor thesis is to determine the impact from the change of the basketball coach during the competitive season to its success. Our focus is on the 1st Slovenian Basketball League (1st SKL) and the Adriatic Basketball League (ABA League). All data was collected from the seasons 2014/2015, 2015/2016 and 2016/2017.
Based on the coach changes, we divided the teams to those who used the change of coach during the competitive season, and those who did not make the changes during the season. We analyzed and compared the number of coach changes within each league and between the two leagues. We were looking for the connection between the number of changes and the ranking of the team.
We calculated the success quotient of the coach according to the number of wins and losses in his time period at one club. We compared the success quotient of the first (old) coach with the success quotient of the second (new) coach, who replaced the first one, and on the basis we analyzed the success of the change.
We gained the results of the first game after the change, so-called »Shock effect«. We compared the last two, three, four and five games of the coach before the change and the first two, three, four and five games of the coach after the change, and we established whether the impact of the change was positive of negative in the shorter or longer run.
We came to a conclusion that the teams who are ranked lower in the rankings are more likely to reach for a coach change during the season than higher ranked teams. After the change of coach during the season, success quotients are most likely to increase. We have also come to the realization that coach changes during the season have had a positive impact on the long term.
