Abstract
V diplomskem delu smo želeli pregledati, kako velik vpliv imata plastika in mikroplastika na morske živali, in pokazati, kako obsežna je ta problematika. Po pregledovanju virov lahko zaključimo z nekaj najpomembnejšimi dejstvi. Obstaja kar 5 otokov plastičnih odpadkov v svetovnih oceanih. Velika težava je v tem, da velike količine mikroplastike (brazdasti kiti povprečno 3653 delcev na dan, morski psi orjaki pa povprečno 13.110 delcev na dan) prefiltrirajo filtratorski morski organizmi. Morske ptice, morske želve in morski sesalci pa so najbolj dokumentirane vrste, na katere vplivajo plastični odpadki. Zapletejo se v plastične odpadke ali pa jih zamenjajo za hrano in požrejo, kar povzroči omejeno gibanje, manjšo konzumacijo, poslabšano reprodukcijsko sposobnost, razjede v prebavilih in smrt. Ljudje trenutno še ne poznamo vseh vplivov, ki jih imajo plastični in mikroplastični delci na nas. Trenutno je na voljo malo rešitev in samo učinkovitejše in bolj trajnostno ravnanje z odpadki ne bo pripomoglo k dokončni rešitvi tega problema. Žal tudi biološko razgradljiva plastika ne predstavlja popolne rešitve. V okoljsko problematiko plastičnih in mikroplastičnih odpadkov bo potrebno vložiti še precej raziskovanja in sredstev, da bomo spoznali in se zavedali njene obsežnosti.

Title:Effects of plastic and microplastic on marine animals
Abstract:
In B. Sc. thesis we tried to explore impacts of plastic and microplastic on marine animals and show the gravity of this problem. After inspection of all sources, we can point out the most important facts. There are 5 plastic islands in world oceans. The problem is that large amounts of microplastics (fin whales on average 3653 particles per day, basking sharks on average 13,110 pieces per day) are filtered by marine filtrators. Sea birds, sea turtles and marine mammals are the most documented species affected by plastic waste. They entangle in plastic waste or confuse them for food, leading to limited movement, decreased consumption, degraded reproductive capacity, gastrointestinal ulcers and death. We are not yet aware of all the effects that plastic and microplastic particles have on us. There are currently few solutions available.and just using more efficient and more sustainable waste management will not help to fully resolve this problem. Unfortunately, even biodegradable plastic is not a complete solution. A lot of research and resources will have to be invested into the research of environmental problems of plastic and microplastic waste, to understand its scale.
