Abstract

Title:Seniors’ Out-of-Box Experience with wearable activity tracker: case study of Garmin Vivofit 3
Abstract:
This thesis aims to explore the Out-of-Box Experience (OoBE) with activity trackers among seniors. Research shows that use of activity trackers among seniors is important because it can increase their quality of life and reduce the risk of physical inactivity that often leads to health and psychosocial problems. Hence, we focused on the phases of the OoBE with which seniors are expected to have the most problems. We conducted a systematic overview of prior literature in the field of activity trackers and their utilization among seniors. Based on formative usability tests on a Garmin Vivofit 3 wearable activity tracker we tried to understand what aspects contribute to seniors’ problems with OoBE across various stages and how the identified problems could be overtaken. The results showed that for seniors with different backgrounds and technological knowledge the OoBE varies considerably. The problem is also the user manual which is too small in size and contains many tech terms. Another big problem is device configuration with (mobile) application, which enables user profile settings and displays the measurements collected with the device.
