Abstract

Title:Saint Francis in ecstasy. One of the first sacral work of Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio
Abstract:
Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio is considered the founder of the Italian Baroque art and one of the most influential Italian painters in art history. In my diploma thesis I examined one of his first sacral work - Saint Francis in Ecstasy. Many critics identified this piece as the milestone that indicates the conception of baroque painting. This piece has been created as an oil painting with the dimensions 93,9 cm x 129,5 cm for the Genoese banker Ottavio Costa and today it is in possession of the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum in Harthford. According to the newest research the painting appeared between 1598 and 1599. The main purpose of my thesis was to accomplish a detailed analysis of the painting that has never been fully realized. I started my analysis with basic informations in which I tried to detect the issue of the year of the conception, the purchaser of the painting and the circumstances of the conception. The next section is about pre-iconographic description of the painting with a formal analysis in which I defined the style, creation of physicality and formation of contour lines, space, composition and the analysis of colours and light. In the iconographic analysis I examined the meaning of various components of the painting and I interrelated them. In the end I upgraded all with a contextual analysis in which I examined the overall cultural background of the conception of this painting which is revealed with the processing of all circumstances of its creation: from personal facts about the artist and his life till cultural and historical circumstances such as the time of Catholic Reformation and the development and revival which reflected in the arts.
