Abstract

Abstract:
The choice of books from the mass of literary works published every year presents a unique challenge for the reader. A number of online tools have been created to help with the search and selection of fiction, which enables users to have a variety of search and browsing options, whilst bibliographic records are enriched supported by the features of Web 2.0 tools. The purpose of this thesis was to evaluate three such systems, namely the internationally recognised Goodreads, the Slovene Good books and the Finnish Kirjasampo, and to answer the question as to the extent in which these enable readers to orientate in their choice of fiction, and in which ways they follow the user-friendly guidelines. In the theoretical part, we focused on a review of the literature on information behaviour of users in the search and selection of fiction and on the concept of the user-friendliness of interfaces, which served as the basis for the development of the criteria for evaluation. The study was carried out using the method of expert study and supported by the personas study method. The results showed that each of the systems offers elements that stand out as added value in terms of functionality and user-friendliness. The elements described in detail and the identified advantages of the systems represent many possibilities for implementing the positive properties in existing systems schemes. Consequently, further research would contribute to systems that would give users the best guidance in choosing fiction, whilst at the same time it would be user-friendly.
