Stress, a disease of modern times, is part of everyday life and is also present at work. Stress in the workplace can escalate into burnout, which has a negative effect on an individual, an organisation and on the entire society.
The theoretical part of the present Master thesis defines the terms »stress« and »burnout« in the workplace, the differences and the reasons leading to it. The Thesis identifies the consequences of stress and burnout, reflecting on different levels, as well as different means of help. The empirical part represents a qualitative research, which was based on inteviews, carried out to find out the amount of stress and burnout in the workplace, the level of attention that is dedicated to this issue by the organisations and the consequences and costs related to experiences of stress and burnout.
The findings show that the growing problem of stress and burnout at work results mostly in the inscrease of absenteeism and the individual psychotherapy help-seeking.
Organisations do not pay enough attention to stress and burnout in the workplace, they even turn a blind eye to it. The resulting costs are reflected mostly on the level of a society.
