Abstract:
The thesis takes the principal philosophical ideas set out by Simone de Beauvoir in her groundbreaking feminist treatise The Second Sex and applies them to modern literature, specifically recent bestselling novels that not only tackle feminist issues, but also present the stories from the point of view of strong, distinctly flawed female protagonists. At a time when there is a growing social interest in human rights and equality, the questions this thesis attempts to answer are: is Simone de Beauvoir's feminism still relevant? How can de Beauvoir's philosophy help us understand the significance of recent female-centered thriller novels topping the bestseller lists and, by extension, the sexism that still seems to pervade the lives of real women? How do the selected bestsellers portray women's issues, like gender discrimination and sexual abuse, and what does the commercial success of these stories say about the state of our society? The thesis takes a look at the three selected bestselling novels - Gillian Flynn's Gone Girl, Paula Hawkins' The Girl on the Train and Jessica Knoll's Luckiest Girl Alive - through the prism of the concepts that de Beauvoir developed based on the prevalent patriarchal mechanisms used to subjugate women, such as "otherness", "alienation", "myths of femininity" and "transcendence vs. immanence". The thesis delves into the storylines of the female protagonists to establish how these concepts are reflected.
