Abstract
Udari strel so zelo hitri in kratkotrajni pojavi, kar, skupaj z zahtevami po dolgi življenjski dobi in baterijskim obratovanjem senzorja, narekuje poseben pristop k reševanju problema.

Title:
Development of sensor for detection and characterization of lightning strikes
Abstract:
This master’s thesis presents the development of Raycap / Iskra zaščcite sensor named ProLEC Wind Advanced. Research shows that the damage caused by lightning strikes to wind turbines depends on different strike characteristics. Sampling and characterization of a lightning strike is the task that the new sensor solves. Based on the data acquired by the new sensor, maintenance planning can be optimized to enable less down-time and consequently bring a bigger revenue. Lightning strikes are very quick and short events. Therefore a non-standard problem solving approach is required in meeting the needs of sensors’ long batterylife. The proposed solution is a symbiosis of a microcontroller and a reprogrammable logic device. The aim of this paper is to present the reader the physical background of atmospheric discharges, wind turbine operation, damage that can occur due to lightning strikes, and development of an advanced lightning strike sensor and the solutions used. Author of the thesis was comprehensively involved in the whole development process with special focus on the programming of the reprogrammable logic device, microcontroller and demonstration software. These topics are presented in more detail.
