Abstract

Title:
Repeatability and reliability of knee joint rotation measurements with double goniometry : research work
Abstract:
Introduction: Rotation in the knee is a necessary movement for physiologic biomechanics of the lower limb in daily activities. The results of existing studies about range of motion of rotation in the knee joint are contradictory. The best method to measure knee rotation is not known yet. Purpose: The purpose of the study was to evaluate repeatibility and reliability of measuring the rotation in the knee using two magnetic goniometers. Methods: The study involved 30 healthy subjects (15 men, 15 women) aged between 20 and 32 years. The internal and external rotation in the left and right knee joints were measured in sitting position with the knee in 90° of flexion. Results: There were no statistically significant difference between the left and right leg. The average range of motion of the internal rotation (standard deviation) was 10.6 ° (2.5°) in the right and 10.9° (2.5°) in the left knee joint, respectively; the average external rotation was 22.0° (3.4°) in the right and 21.8° (4.0°) in the left knee joint, respectively. The intraclass coefficient of correlation (ICC) for repeatability ranged from 0.76 to 0.89 and for reliability from 0.64 to 0.87. ICC values show very good or excellent repeatability and reliability of the method used. Discussion and conclusion: The method was proved to be repeatable and reliable, but additional researches are needed before transferring it to clinical practice. Values of internal and external rotation do not match to the values of other authors.
