The purpose of this paper is to present lexical availability as one of the criteria for vocabulary selection for learning and teaching. Available vocabulary is what would potentially be used in a certain communicative situation. In the second half of the 20th century Spanish and Hispano-Americanlinguists have developed lexical availability into an important tool of lingustic research in the fields of dialectology, sociolinguistics, psicholinguistics, ethnolinguistics. lexicography and Spanish teaching as a mother tongue and foreign language.
