To increase active transportation to and from school in the future, it will be necessary to ensure a higher level of traffic safety on school routes and approach the planning of cycling infrastructure and footpaths holistically. The analysis of selected school routes in Slovenia showed that the majority of them in suburban and rural settlements are not yet adequately equipped to enable active transportation of children and young people to and from school. Based on the reports of the coordinators of the elementary schools that participated in the “Let's Walk with Kokoška Rozi campaign”, it turned out that many children and youngsters want to come to school actively. For the state to enable them to do this, the planning of the future transport infrastructure, empowering sustainable mobility in the society and the immediate elimination of dangers on the school routes should be the priority. In the future, a high-quality educational program of primary schools, with professional support and the support of parents, as well as cooperation between schools, and the municipality and the regular inclusion of plans for safe school routes in integrated transport strategies at the municipal level, would also make a significant contribution to empowering the sustainable travel habits of children and young people in Slovenia.
