In the 2018/2019 school year, a language assistant position for Slovene was announced for the first time at secondary schools with Slovene language in Trieste. The article is based on the experience of a language assistant in the 2018/2019 and 2019/2020 school years. In the first part, the article substantiates the role of a language assistant for Slovene within the minority secondary education in Trieste. It then describes, based on an outline of the sociolinguistic situation, the didactic approaches and opportunities for developing communication skills in Slovene among Trieste school students.
