The most common causes for farm fires are spontaneous combustion, electrical installation malfunction, improper handling of flammable substances, and errors on farm machinery. Fire safety measures are those that reduce fire risks, prevent spreading of the fire, and allow quick fire extinguishing with minimum damage. The thesis aimed to gain information about the number of farm fires in Slovenia. Our goal was to find out how farmers take care of farm fire safety and the corresponding data about previous farm fires. We have used SPIN (System for reporting about interventions and accidents) to analyze the number of fires. Between 2014 and 2018, there were a total 587 farm fires in Slovenia, of which 140 fires happened in stables. Farmers (n=47) from municipality Ribnica and surrounding municipalities were interviewed via online survey. Eight of them already had a fire on their farm. The most common cause of fire was spontaneous combustion. Fire safety measures that farmers consider on their farms are regular maintenance of machines, not using open fire, caution at work and monitoring of the hay temperature. On most farms, they have fire extinguishers. However, they are not maintained regularly. Most farms also have hydrants or other water sources that could be used for extinguishing the fire. As a conclusion, we find that most farmers are aware of fire safety measures on their farm. According to our findings, farmers care for fire safety.
