Phraseological units represent an important part of our lives. We already come into contact with them as toddlers by reading books. Due to children’s lack of cognitive capacities, literature written for children and young adults makes use of more predictable and specific meanings.
This Master’s Thesis focuses on the functions of phraseological units that appear in the novel Tintenherz (Inkheart) written by the German writer Cornelia Funke. The first part of the Master’s Thesis deals with the theoretical background of phraseology as a discipline, the classification of phraseological units according to Harald Burger (2015), the use of phraseological units in children’s and young adult’s literature, and the functions of phraseological units in connection with the emotional attitude that accompanies their usage. The second, empirical part focuses on the novel’s author Cornelia Funke and summarizes the book’s plot. The thesis continues with the analysis of phraseological units under the following parameters: phraseological unit, meaning, context of the novel, modification type and emotion.
The goal of the thesis was to look for phraseological units and analyze them according to their classification, the context in which they appear in the novel, and also according to the narrator’s or characters’ emotional state during the usage of the phraseological unit.
