In the master’s thesis, we analysed the attitudes of parents and teachers of mathematics and home economics towards financial education in elementary school. Firstly, we considered the concept of financial literacy, as was defined by different authors, and the importance of formal financial education of young people. We presented the results of the researches on financial literacy that were carried out in Slovenia, and continued with the review of financial education in some countries around the world and in Slovenia. In the second part of the master’s thesis, we presented a proposal of implementation of financial contents into compulsory subjects in elementary schools and an example of implementation of the consideration of saving interests in mathematics class.
In the empirical part, we described a study, which was carried out on the sample of 47 teachers and 96 parents. We found out that respondents think youngsters have some financial knowledge, which should be deepened. The respondents also think pupils should be educated more extensively regarding finances in the framework of compulsory education and that there should be more financial contents in school curriculum, whereas the main role would be taken by home economics.
The results of the survey show a good financial self-esteem of teachers of home economics and a low financial self-esteem of teachers of mathematics. The majority of the teachers expressed the desire for professional support by financial experts in financial education.
